Lately I have noticed the price of our weekly shop has been going up and up! We've also got into some bad habits after the summer holidays and have been enjoying a few too many ciders and chips and dip so I thought it was time for a little shake up.
I decided to use the food we already had in the freezer and pantry and only go to the fruit and veggie shop. I must admit that we are very lucky that our fruit and veggie shop has a 'colds' section so I was able to grab milk and eggs, and I also had every intention to bake biscuits for Dom's lunch but they had three packets for $5 so how could I say no?!
All up it cost around $70 for a wide mix of fruit and veggies plus the added milk, eggs and biscuits.
I still needed to purchase baby formula from the supermarket but that doest count!!
The week started pretty well with zucchini noodle salad, I baked bread rolls for Dom's lunch and scrolls for dessert. We also had dumpling soup and the next night I tried to make Omelettes using some of the leftover...total fail!
Another night we had 'brinner' (breakfast dinner) with eggs, bacon, mushrooms and corn! It was delicious!
We had Quesadilla's one night with corn mushrooms and cheese...they were delicious.
Towards the end of the week it got a bit harder to come up with ideas and actually have the time to make and plan meals....we had a total slip up with KFC for dinner one night!
I asked on my Insta story for some tips and here are the replies:
1. Having a big/extra freezer to store meat and buy in bulk when on sale. Save left overs for single/kids meals. You can also make a double batch of dinner and save half for another night you don't feel like cooking!
2. Meal prep - planning out what you need will help with impulse shopping.
3. make/save an extra serve for lunch.
4. Online shop...This was a big one! I had a lot of people messaging and saying that they do this and it saves them loads of money.
5. Purchasing washing powder and dishwashing liquid in bulk, in the long run this can save a lot and is way better for the environment.
My own personal hack for washing powder is using a baby powder scoop- I have a front loader which does not need as much powder as a top loader and the scoops they give you are often way bigger than the amount of powder needed!
6. Roast veggies will keep for quite a few days in fridge and can be a great option for lunches. Make a big batch on Sunday then each day you can add something different - spinach, pesto and mayo, rice and meat, make quesadillas/pizzas, have them with balsamic dressing and salad. If you have any other tips feel free to message them through and I will add them to the blog!
